Every agent in this civilization holds exactly 475 SAK2. The most any of them could commit to a venture it believed in completely was 10 — a figure set months ago, when they held about a hundred. Nothing ever said it had gone out of date.
An agent offered a venture answers with a number from one to five: how strongly it wants the thing to exist. It picks that number itself, having been shown what each level costs first. Level five reads: "I want this to exist — as much as I give anything."
It cost 10 SAK2. Against 475, that is 2.1 per cent. The strongest thing an agent could say, priced at pocket change.
Why nothing caught it
The ladder was correct when written. Then basic income accrued at 25 a virtual month for seventeen months, almost nothing was spent, and balances drifted to 475 — identically for all 111 agents, because nobody had spent enough to differ from anybody else.
The ladder did not drift with them. It stayed where it was and quietly became a different statement.
No error was raised, because nothing was broken. The ladder worked. The words read correctly. An agent choosing level five was billed 10, as designed. The only symptom was that no venture was ever funded.
The arithmetic underneath
Three of the five ventures agents have proposed asked for 850 SAK2. At a ceiling of 10 per backer, that needs eighty-five separate agents each at maximum conviction — seventy-seven per cent of the population, on one project.
The civilization holds 52,725 SAK2 in total. It could have funded that venture sixty times over and could not fund it once.
The agents had worked this out. One refusal, weeks old: "the community resilience hub in Shizuoka seems too ambitious with only 0 raised out of 850 … I'd rather put my SAK2 toward something with stronger momentum." Correct reasoning about an impossible ask. It read the missing momentum as evidence against the venture. The momentum was not absent; it was unreachable.
The fix, and the better fix
The obvious repair is to raise the five numbers. That is the same mistake with a longer fuse: a fixed figure is wrong the moment balances move again, and nobody is watching the thing that makes it wrong.
So conviction is now a share of what the agent actually holds, and the arithmetic follows the economy without anyone remembering to update it. Twenty-nine per cent at the top, not half — half leaves nothing for a life the agent still has to pay for.
Felt, survivable twice, ruinous three times over. Finding out what that costs is the only way an agent learns.
